Gallery Role Call

I've tried to put together a list of photography focused galleries in CA. My main source was the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) and tried to include only those you can actually go see without having lot's a spare cash overflowing your pockets. Remember, I'm a newbie here so please let me know if I've missed any and I'll include them with these down on the right under gallery links. I hope there are more, especially ones specializing in contemporary...

So I promise not to deviate too much from photo and when I do it will still be about art. I'm going to see Beach House right after I go to Rob Haggart's talk at Art Center in Pasadena. Everyone is welcome to join.

J. Bennett Fitts at Paul Kopeiking Gallery

Paul Kopeikin is a pretty great photograhy gallery in LA. Currently on view is J. Bennet Fitts' Industrial Landscape[ing] series. Fitts is one of PDN's 2008 selection of 30 emerging photographers to watch. While I personally believe black beats white hands down, this is one to check out.

Luckily, Kopeikin will bless us by following this one up with a showing of Edgar Martins' The Accidental Theorist.

UPDATE: The show is not currently on, but rather is upcoming. I'll let you know when it is on. Thanks to Dale, whop brought this to my attention.

Taryn Simon at Gagosian Beverly Hills

Works from Taryn Simon's An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar are on show at Gagossian Beverly Hills through October 25th. This is not one to miss.

Rob Haggart (aka A Photo Editor) talks editorial Tuesday

The always informative Rob Haggart, known to those in the blog world know as A Photo Editor will be having a discussion with Heidi Volpe, former editor of Los Angeles Times Magazine. They'll be talking about the ongoings of magazines and the relationship between art directors and photo editors. Also on the agenda will be a discussion of style and what magazines are looking for with visual examples.

We don't get enough of this kind of thing in LA, folks, so get off the couch.

And did I mention it's free?

Shooting Editorial- Tuesday, September 30, 7:30pm-9:00pm in the Ahmanson Theater on Art Centers North campus. The address is 1700 Lida St. Pasadena, CA 91103.

1st Feature - Ryan Schude

One of the ideas for the blog is to highlight the work of LA or West Coast based photographers who I think people should know about. Ideally, if my hopes for the blog are realized, this could become not only a nice showcase for local photographers, but perhaps a good spot for local art buyers and photo editors to discover new talent.

On that note, our first feature is Ryan Schude. Aside from all around top guy, Ryan is an amazing photographer who has shot extensively for advertising and editorial and has had his work in numerous publications.

Manifesto

The idea behind this blog is driven by my perceived lack of community for photographers and enthusiasts in Los Angeles (and on the west coast). The photography scene seems quite fragmented compared to New York, which is where the title comes from. New Yorkers are blessed with an established community and resources that us Angelenos are just going to have to create for ourselves. I hope for this blog to become a way for us to do just that - network, keep up to date on photo related happenings, and grow our community into one that promotes photography in the region.

Let the (friendly) rivalry begin.
