Photographers doing video?

So let me get this straight. Commercial and editorial shooters are now convinced that because everyone has access to quality cameras and can take “good” photos, they’ve got to move into video for new media, despite the fact that there are heaps of people who specialized in video and have a huge leg up and also despite the fact that pretty soon HD video will be in accessible to everyone and not just those that can afford a $2,000 camera just like what happened with photography? Does anyone else see the failed logic here? This has been bugging me for a year or so.

Taryn Simon @ Gagosian

Copyright Taryn Simon

Taryn Simon's newest work, Contraband will be on view at Gagosian Beverly Hills through November 6, featuring items confiscated entering the US at JFK. Over 5 days, she shot over 1,000 confiscated items. I'm guessing not all will be on display...

This work may be a bit too typological for my taste but I can't balk at an opportunity to see my number one photo crush in person.

Opening Reception:

Wednesday, September 22nd, 6-8pm

Larry Towell speaks at Annenberg

Next Thursday, Magnum member Larry Towell will speak as part of the Annenberg Space for Photography's Iris Nights lectures. It's too bad I don't get off work until the thing starts at 6:30. Maybe they should rename it Iris Evenings.

Register early (recommended) here.

On a related note, I wish I could watch Indecisive Moments.

Still (and not so still) Life @ the Getty

Copyright Marian Drew

In Focus: Still Life opens today at the Getty through Jan 23rd. In the case of the photo below, I'd say it's not exactly still.

Random yet somewhat relevant to Los Angeles fact of the day: Did you know that Still Life literally translated is "Dead Nature" in Spanish?

While there, be sure not to miss Engaged Observers: Documentary Photography Since the Sixties, on view through November 14.

Feature - Olivier Laude

Olivier Laude's a weirdo and I love it. It's one thing to be a weirdo and another to execute that vision technically and Olivier excels at this. He lives up the coast in San Fran and his scenes scream CA to me. Many of them appear to have been shot in the central valley and his colors truly pop.

For further weirdness, here's an interview from 2008 with Timothy Archibald.

Massimo Vitali @ M+B

Having gone away for the week, I missed the opening reception for Massimo Vitali's show at M+B and also neglected to let you know about it. Ok, so we missed the Grolsch but there's still plenty of time to view the show sober.

Vacation & Simone Lueck @ Kopeikin Culver City

I'm headed up to Lake Tahoe next week so the blog will be on a short break until Friday.

Lake Tahoe - Copyright Katie Shapiro

Since that will be short notice, I'd like to let you know about Simone Lueck's first solo show, which is opening at Kopeikin Gallery's new digs in Culver City, coinciding with the Culver City art walk next Saturday the 18th.

"For the past year the artist has been placing ads on Craigslist and in newspapers in various US cities soliciting older woman to pose as glamorous movie stars. The pictures are collaborations: Each participant is asked to provide her own makeup, hair and wardrobe. As active players in the affair, the women are able to shape their individual portrayal. The shows are fantasies, and the performance reflects each woman's perception of glamour. Through these private exhibitions, a culture of faded glamour emerges. The women are understood to be motivated by the desire to perform, as though this essential desire had been left idle and unfulfilled. While posing as a glamorous movie star, each woman is, for a moment, fulfilling her fantasy. The series reveals a world where faded glamour is glowing, harsh and beautiful."
