Quote of the Week - Alfred Stieglitz
On when to release your next project:
"There are two ways of looking at a thing.
Either you feel that a thing must be perfect before you present it to the public, or you are willing to let it go out even knowing that it is not perfect, because you are striving for something even beyond what you have achieved, but in struggling too hard for perfection you know that you may lose the very glimmer of life, the very spirit of the thing that you also know exists at a particular point in what you have done; and that to interfere with it would be to destroy that very living quality."
William Gedney's journal entry, quoting Alfred Stieglitz

Feature - Ben Goddard
Ben Goddard studied at Bard and now calls Los Angeles home. I like how he's not afraid to use humor and poke fun at himself. Yes, that's Ben in all of these shots.

Introducing: INVERSION
Copyright J. Wesley Brown
Since this blog is about photography in Los Angeles/California, I don't really talk about myself that much except when there's big news. This is one of those instances.
My new series, Inversion, is now officially live and can be seen here. It is presented online as a series of inanimate, animated GIF's. The whole thing takes about 6 minutes roughly to get through so you might want to make sure you've got a little bit of time and patience before clicking through.
Also, head over and read Andy Adam's essay, titled Photo 2.0 - Online Photographic Thinking (Revisited) from last week, which touches on some of the same issues I was trying to address with Inversion and is a good read.
Thanks for looking!

Another Interesting Quote
From the NYT post:
"In addition, a cornerstone of the Getty’s photo holdings is the former private collection and archives of Sam Wagstaff, a curator and major collector who was Mapplethorpe’s companion, muse and mentor until Mr. Wagstaff’s death in 1987. (Mapplethorpe died two years later.)"
Getty and LACMA acquire Mapplethorpe Collection
"The acquisition marks the first time the two institutions have collected works of art to share; they formed a partnership to compete more effectively against other major museums being considered as homes for the collection by the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation. The foundation is donating the majority of the more than 2,000 photographs – including Mapplethorpe silver-gelatin prints and Polaroid works – and the Getty and the Los Angeles County museum, with help from the David Geffen Foundation, are buying the rest. The foundation estimated the value of the entire collection – which includes 120,000 negatives – at more than $30 million."

Auction to Benefit Larchmont Charter Schools
I've always been infuriated that schools in different areas receive different levels of funding based on property tax revenue. It goes against the basic tenant of our founding as a country, that all men (and especially children) were created equal.

Opening Saturday: Malick Sidibé @ M+B
I really loved Malick Sidibé: Bamako Style at Olivia Aruana Gallery during PhotoEspana 09 (the show took the festival's biggest prize) so I'm excited to attend the opening of The Eye of Bamako at M+B this Saturday from 6-8pm.

"In the West people have to have all this stuff to be happy, but we don’t have this system. But physical poverty doesn’t mean moral poverty. In Africa we have moral riches and happiness in our hearts."
It shows in his photos. Sidibé is one of Africa's great photographers.

American Dollhouse
"American Dollhouse is Manic and Muse’s first production event– a theatrical exhibit that will transform an art gallery into a life-size dollhouse circa 1955. Fusing together performance, music and art installation, American Dollhouse will give audiences the opportunity to explore the various rooms of the iconic dollhouse, witnessing the private lives of the family that inhabits it."

Larry Fink @ Fahey Klein
Larry Fink's The Vanities opens at Fahey Klein tomorrow from 7-9pm. The Oscar parties he shoots look like a lot of fun, but maybe a little less so if you're there to photograph.

Quote of the Week - Larry Fink - Vanities
"In the early days, I used to think I could take one picture, and if it were successful, it would epitomize that human being. Now, I think that is an absurd notion because I see that all people are 360 degrees around."
